This car is hot. That's all I can say. It's damn sexy. No, I haven't bought it because I'm very thorough and I'm still doing all my research, but it's a Mazda 3 - and I wasn't really that excited about owning a new car until I stumbled across this little gem - which is cheaper than both the Civic and the Corolla and is also much sexier. The main drawback - and the thing that's holding me back - is the gas mileage. It's decent - at 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. But that doesn't even compare with the Corolla, which gets 41 mpg in the city and 31 mpg in the city. The Civic is in between those two.
Gas mileage is the only thing I really care about - I hate buying gas, I hate oil companies, I hate gas stations, I hate everything about the whole oil/fuel industry. So I like to avoid it as much as humanly possible by buying a car that's not a gas pig. That really has been my only concern ... that and the cost. But then I drove the Mazda 3 and I started to feel weak. I mean, sure, it's more of a gas pig, but it's not tooooo bad, right? I don't know. I'll probably obsess about it for a few weeks or so before I decide which car to buy.

(1/35 gal/mi - 1/41 gal/mi)*10000 mi =41 gallons
After driving 10,000 miles, you will at most use an extra 40 gallons with your Mazda. That will cost (at $3), $120.
It will take a while to pay for that extra 6 mpg. Do you drive that much? If you're doing car payments, that extra that the other car costs will be magnified even more. I think in your situation, the more affordable car (especially if you like it more!) is the best choice, since its only marginally worse mileage.

I like the way you think... plus if I have some numbers to justify it, it seems even better. Now my problem is that all these small cars are so damn popular that not too many dealers have them on the lot - thanks to $3/gallon gas prices. It doesn't help that Sioux Falls is also the only place within about 100 miles and the only place in all of South Dakota that even sells foreign cars. So I might have to special order it from the dealer - giving him ample opportunity to try to screw me over. I'm doing some more research though to figure out if there's a way I can avoid that.

Hey Mel,
Try Cars.com - dealers advertise new cars on there as well. You may have to take a trip to Minneapolis, but hey, it's a trip to a real city! :-P
And I'd say, go for the car you love - you'll be much more satisfied in the long run :)
